Missions and Outreach at Zion

Your church is busy with Christ-centered projects this fall.  You are invited to participate fully.

Read on for a synopsis of what’s going on at Zion:

Church World Service Buckets

Zion is putting together emergency cleanup buckets which equip people after a flood, tornado or other disaster.  Donate:  Scouring pads, sponges, scrub brushes, Easy Wipes, small bottles of liquid laundry detergent, packages of 48-50 clothespins, clothesline, non-surgical latex cleaning gloves (like Playtex living gloves), 6-9 oz. bottles of non-aerosol insect repellent.  Help assemble the buckets at an upcoming workshop.

Holy Joe’s Café

Zion will be sending a donation to Holy Joe’s, which is an all-volunteer non-profit that sends coffee to U.S. troops via a network of deployed Chaplains.  The troops can stop into the Chaplain’s office for a cup of coffee just like at a café back in the states, and chat with the Chaplain if they’d like.

Plan to stay after church on Sunday October 29th for Zion’s Trunk-or-Treat activity for our kids and the surrounding community.  Decorate your trunk and hand out treats to kids as they make their way around our parking lot.  This provides a safe and fun Halloween environment for kids. There will be free hot dogs and popcorn, games, and music for all.  We need your participation to make this event a success!

National Food Day is Oct 16th /World Food Day is Oct 24th

Raising awareness about sustainable farming practices, food justice, mindful and healthful eating, and hunger and food security are spotlighted this month.  Special emphasis will be on access others have to food, food for hospitality, and food sharing as a sacramental practice.

Families in Crisis in our Neighborhood

Zion has an ongoing relationship with Joppa View Elementary School to help families in acute crisis.  We provide food and clothing to families that find themselves in difficult situations such as eviction or medical crisis.

Perry Hall Food Pantry

Shelf stable food for the food pantry can be donated at any time to our collection bin in the Narthex.  These foods are taken to the pantry to be distributed to needy families in our community.

Clean Water for All

Water is a God-given gift that we often take for granted because we have a clean and safe water supply.  There will be a display in the hall on an upcoming Sunday where you can take the “Tap Water Challenge”.  Buy a Zion water bottle to help fund our justice and Mission work.

Infant and Pregnancy Loss Prayer Service and Vigil

Continue Zion’s tradition of observing this important day by coming to church to pray for families who’ve lost a loved baby. October 18 at 7 pm.

Peace of Pie

After church on Sunday November 19th, join us in Fellowship Hall to relax with a piece of homemade pie to begin the holiday week.  Many kinds of pie will be available for purchase at this Missions fundraiser.

Thanksgiving Food Collections

Look for an announcement later this month as we start collecting for families in need of Thanksgiving dinner.  We will collect shelf stable holiday foods and have a coin collection for turkeys.

Looking Ahead to Christmas and the New Year:

Christmas Party with The Arc on December 10th – We will once again welcome clients of The Arc and their caregivers for an old-fashioned Christmas Celebration.  After church we will have a potluck luncheon, carol sing, music, crafts, and activities.  You are invited to experience Christmas joy by celebrating with Zion friends and family and guests from The Arc. “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.  In this way, some have entertained angels, unaware.” (Hebrews 13:2)

Alternative Gift Giving – Is there someone on your gift list who has everything?  Think about giving a gift in their honor.  Through Church World Service and Heifer International, you can give an item like a blanket, seeds, tools, or farm animals to needy people in honor of your friends and family.  You’ll receive a beautiful gift card to give to them, showing that a gift was given in their honor.  Look for more details as Advent approaches.

Donations for Operation Smile Team in January - Zion members and friends donate Medicines and Gauze pads to the plastic surgery team from Johns Hopkins Hospital to provide cleft palate and hand surgeries to needy children in other countries.  We’ll begin collecting in January.

Souper Sunday – Purchase a ticket for All-You-Can-Eat soup and salad after church on Super Bowl Sunday, February 4th
